Velocity calculator and sprint forecast

Enter the story points your team finished in recent sprints. You get your average velocity and an honest range for how many sprints the rest of the backlog will take, and roughly when it will be done.

Your team's history

Average velocity–points per sprint
Likely range–points per sprint
Sprints to finish–most likely

Enter at least two sprints and the points left to get a forecast.

How the forecast works

Velocity is the number of story points a team finishes in a sprint. The calculator uses your last 8 sprints, because older sprints often reflect a different team or way of working.

average velocity = total points ÷ number of sprints

No team finishes the same amount every sprint, so a single date would be false precision. The forecast gives a range instead:

  • Slow end: the average of your three lowest sprints (or your lowest one, if you have fewer than six).
  • Fast end: the average of your three highest sprints (or your highest one, if you have fewer than six).

sprints to finish = points left ÷ velocity, rounded up

Done once with each of the three velocities, that gives the earliest, most likely and latest finish. With a start date, each count of sprints becomes the date the last of those sprints ends.

Getting a forecast you can trust

  • Count only finished work. Points for stories that were nearly done don't count until they are done.
  • Expect the backlog to grow. The forecast assumes no new work is added. If scope keeps growing, re-run it every sprint.
  • Don't compare teams. Story points are relative to the team that estimated them, so one team's 30 isn't another team's 30.
  • Don't turn velocity into a target. Pushing for a higher number tends to inflate estimates rather than speed up delivery.
